Jokulsarlon is a large glacial lagoon at the foot of Europe’s largest glacier, the Vatnajökull Glacier. A large lagoon was formed at the foot of the glacier. As the ice melts, massive chunks break off from the tongue of the glacier and float in the lagoon.
Then these giant chunks of ice, like real icebergs, move toward the ocean, slowly floating in the lagoon. It’s a mystical sight that leaves no one indifferent. Icebergs come in all different sizes, shapes, and shades. Some are an attractive blue and turquoise color, while others are milky white and some are black.
The largest icebergs can reach 20 meters or more. The lagoon is constantly changing. At high tide, the lagoon fills with water. A current forms that carry the icebergs into the ocean through a narrow channel.
Many call the glacial lagoon Jokulsarlon the pearl of Iceland. It is truly a unique and beautiful natural wonder. The lagoon is easily accessible and therefore Jokulsarlon is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. In fact, Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach are the most photographed places in Iceland.
Don’t forget that the beauty of Jokursarlon is unique and the lagoon is different every time.
These images are part of my Jokulsarlon series, images of the Icelandic ice lagoon. Jokulsarlon Ice Lagoon is one of the most famous places in Iceland. These pictures show the strength and beauty of this place. The ice icebergs swim in a small lagoon until the tide takes them out into the ocean.
